An archipelago symbolizes a cluster of islands that are closely connected yet separated by short distances. Ukrainian artist Aglaya Nogina uses this metaphor to depict the enduring bonds she shares with her closest friends. Despite the seismic shifts caused by war over the past two years, their unity remains unwavering. Through a series of large-scale portraits, Aglaya explores themes of femininity, resilience, inner and outer beauty, and the profound strength of friendship.

Aglaya incorporates her own texts and the xerography printing technique into her work.

Reflecting on the project, Aglaya shares: “Female friendship holds a special place in my heart, imbued with immense energy. It is through the camaraderie of women who resonate with my spirit that I find solace and replenish my own strength. As George Santayana wrote, ‘The loneliest woman in the universe is not the one who has no man, but the one who has no best friend.’ Each reunion, whether I am visiting them or welcoming them, brings a sense of peace and belonging.”
